Outing and a movie

Another day off and for once I actually went out. Before we went you Brooke, Peter and I took some time to knock down the bungs we had put up yesterday and we also reset the brow. Then Katie, Peter and I went out.

Got a ride over with Branson over to shore, took a bus downtown and walked around. Went to the library and got some dvds, ran into Kat and Josh who went to shore earlier. Ended up having some creps at this place Peter loves called Paris, he’s gone there everyday he’s had off except when they were closed. Walked around some more, not much to do today, just hung out. Took the bus back up to the marina and low and behold there is Kat and Josh, for as big as West Palm Beach is our crew has it’s usual hang outs.

Brooke and Sveta had made dinner for us, that’s right Chuck is leaving us for good now, coming back tomorrow to get his things and he’s out of there. Josh will take over breakfast and lunch tomorrow, I’ll do dinner and from there maybe we’ll take turns or Josh will stay on and cook.

I made chocolate chip cookies and then we watched a movie down in forward crew, aka the dojo.

Deck fixing, busting and cooking

Yesterday we got more bungs, which means today we got to make lots of bungholes and then fill them with bungs. Katie and I did about 10 rows before lunch, had to move the deck box and you could tell it’s been sitting there awhile because the deck looked really new under it.

Kat was sick so she slept in, Josh was doing duty things and Brooke was off with Peter hoping to get the small boat’s engine back, but ended up doing some shopping anyway.

At lunch capstan Peter said that Chuck was not going to be here to cook dinner because he had some job interview, so I was put up to cook. Planed on cooking tomorrow, so there were already all the ingredients I wanted.

Brooke, Katie and I continued to bung for a while, then helped sand the capstan some more, there were still some sanding marks left in it. Josh was also working on sanding the stanchion posts of the mizzen fife rail. Then we all went up to the main course to bust up the starboard side, it was sagging a lot and looking horrible. I’m not a big fan of the course yard, for some reason it is the most unsettling, but I’m proud of us.

Before we were stood down at capstan Sveta made a few comments about how far we’ve come, the big improvements we’ve made and that we have a good work ethic. She said that when the old crew comes back we wouldn’t be able to impress them with our skills, but how we work and our attention to detail on projects.

After all that I went to go make dinner with the help of Brooke, if she hadn’t helped me dinner would have been late. We ended up making lemon couscous, ratatouille, cabbage salad with sesame dressing and apple crisp. Everyone really enjoyed it and I’m glad that I cooked enough.

Great cabin, paint and oil

It was so cold this morning that it was decided we didn’t have to work in the rig or even outside till later in the afternoon. First I got to clean the great cabin, wash the windows, wipe down all the wood, sweep a bit and then clean all the cushions, they had sand and all other kinds of dirt on them.

Kat was painting the sole of forward crew, Josh doing something in the engine room and later working on the florescent lights, Katie was doing a safety check of fire extinguishers, fire alarms and air horns. Brooke was adding a second coat and grit to the nav station companion way but got pulled away by Peter to drive him around, so I ended up finishing that.

Then I got to once again go aloft and touch up the main cross trees, third times a charm I suppose. It was hard to do because it was all the spots that people had missed before for a reason; they are difficult to get at.

While I was doing that everyone else was moving stuff from the fore deck off the boat to behind a paint shed so we can store it there for now while we work here docked.

Then Katie and I sanded the top of the capstan while Josh and Kat sanded the mizzen fife rail. It took us awhile to sand because the capstan had varnish and we are changing it to oil, easier to maintain. Brooke and Peter got back just in time with the oil so we could give it a one quick coat.

They also came baring other gifts, I got three letters and the boat got a few and we got more bungs! Yay for bungs!

Oil paint sticks to everything

Finished painting the bow sprit today, put another layer of texture paint on it and then later helped Josh finish up painting another section of the hull. The oil paint was particularly thick and sticky today because it was so cold it wouldn’t move at all, even with thinner. My wrist hurts from caulking yesterday and then pushing hard with the brush today.

Kat and Katie tried to put another layer on the cross trees but didn’t get done in time for tours. Later they moved to the half round and got a lot done, but at the end of the day they realized they put a wrong piece on in the wrong spot. All four of us quickly took it off and put the right piece on, we all four of us worked on the half round at once we could finish it in a matter of hours.

Brooke also took Peter ashore and drove him to Home Depot to get a few things.

Kat and I quickly pained aloft this morning, I touched up the crosstrees while she did the main topsail yard, then we both texture painted the main crosstrees. Then we both got to work on the half round, oh joy, what fun. It wasn’t as bad this time for some reason, I think because I’m actually good at it and know what I’m doing for once. We were practically out of screws so we didn’t put the boards on, just pried them off and caulked.

Brooke was on the bowsprit again; Katie and Josh were finishing the half round on the starboard side and then painting the hull.

My wrist is really sore from all the scrapping and trying to pry out the stupid nails. It was also really cold today and looks like it will be for the rest of the week.

Also I heard that in about 2 weeks we’ll make another fuel run, another adventure, and Cookie, a cook from a season or so ago, Maisie’s bf, will be back on for the sailing season. Better food hopefully!

Another day off

Everyone slept in this morning and took the whole day easy. I was on the computer most of the day catching up on tv shows and later worked on some embroidery I’m doing on a bag. Brooke made lunch, eggplant sandwiches, Sveta made dinner, moussaka and salad, a traditional Bulgarian meal.

We also had to move a brow because it was damaging part of the rail.

Also, someone played a prank on Peter, they saran wrapped his room! His mag light, pens, products, towels, books, everything!

Someone had to stay behind and watch the boat, so that's what I did for New Years. Watched the live stream from Time Square and talked to some friends who were already enjoying the new year. There were some fire works going off around Palm Beach that I could see from the boat.
