Oiling the deck

Most of us spent the better part of the day caulking more seams in the deck. Grant finished up the column in the great cabin and varnished both of them, really great looking. Ethan painted trim for the shower and fixed a broken leg on the grate next to the helm. Brooke went with Peter to get the floor sander and after lunch Peter and Grant started sanding the starboard fore deck. Peter looked really funny, like and old man mowing the lawn, once it was sanded it looked really great, like a new deck compared to before. Spent a long time sweeping up all the sawdust so that nothing would fall in the oil. Then Katie and Grant started to oil with rollers and still had to be on bubble patrol with a brush. Peter and I ate dinner quickly and then put on another coat because the deck was really socking it up. Putting on the second coat was really tricky because we hand to lean out, I had myself wrapped around a stanchion while leaning out. The deck looks really amazing and I can’t wait for all of it to be done! Some things are going to be really tricky to get into; I for see some intense hand sanding.

NP1 Jump rope

More revving of seams and applying of NP1. Grant finished up priming stuff on the head rig and then joined Brooke, Katie, Kat and I in revving. We were trying to make good leads and then pulling them out in one long continuous strip. Kat got a great one and started doing jump rope with it, I got a longer one but it was thin in some spots and finally Katie got the best one. We eventually did play jump rope with it, all of us together; we even got three people to jumping all at once. It was really hilarious. Sveta also worked on getting the new eyebolts in. At the end of the day Brooke and Grant were really covered with NP1, all over their arms and faces, there was some kind of war that went on.

Another day playing with NP 1. Brooke caulked a few seams and then went out for a food and supply run. Katie and I revved the seam around the starboard galley hatch and caulked it. Kat filled some cracks with NP1 and Grant oiled the spanker boom and rust busted part of the head rig. Ethan did some more work in the engine room and played with more lights. At the end of the day Grant went aloft with Sveta where they beat up a broken block till it came apart.

Inconsistant weather

This morning’s sweep and mop of the tweens took forever because only Kat and I did it and we also had to wipe down all the passenger cabins because there was still dust everywhere from sanding. Which at the end of the day was pointless because Katie sanded the column again and dust spread everywhere. The weather was stupid today so we kept running away from the rain, but it would only sprinkle for a few minutes. Katie and I finished caulking the nav hatch, the MSD vent and two sides of the port galley hatch. Kat oiled the fore fife rail and later did whippings, Ethan sawed boards to the right size for the foretop, Grant dug our more around the prêt galley hatch. I did a few whippings on lines and later sewed the canvas on the sail. Brooke spent the day with her parents who later came back to the boat and her mom cooked us dinner.

NP1 smells like chocolate

Deck wash this morning took forever; we had to knock down a lot of bungs and since we hadn’t done one in ages had to make sure we got all the junk off the deck. In the morning I gave the bell housing another coat of black paint, Brooke pulled out the caulk from around a vent. Later Brooke and I pulled out the caulking from around the nav hatch and started on the galley hatches. We then put NP1 caulk around part of the nav hatch that was dry. Katie painted the fire extinguisher bracket, put the flags out to air, bunged with Grant and at the end of the day helped Brooke and I. Kat did more oiling and Ethan put up another set of lights behind the main mast to shine on the map and arms chest.

Day off, marine junk stores

We got a lot of things done today, but more of just looking and shops and seeing that they didn’t have what we needed. First went to Dunkin Donuts for coffee, dropped Grant off at the bank so he could open an account and we went to a tattoo shop where Brooke ended up getting a few nose rings. We also stopped at a vintage shop and looked at some great clothing, but all out of our price range. Went to Home Depot next where we all drooled over power tools and Brooke and I ended up getting some clips to help make our rig better. I looked around for something to use as a marlin spike but there was nothing good anywhere. Went to west marine next where they had no foul weather gear at all. Then to two marine junk shops, Brooke got a thirty dollar used wetsuit at one and at the other we ran into Kat and Josh. Kat bought a lamp that runs off some oil for her mom. Had a late lunch, played at the park, went to a Scuba shop for Grant and finally stopped at Wallgreens for a few things.

At the end of the day, after having searched high and low for a marlinspike I magically got a free one. Katie and I were talking about rope belts because I was looking things up online and Dennis inquired for what. Explained about my lack of marlinspike and he gave me his old one, sheath included! XD

Rust busting, flags and sanding

Worked inside again. Kat and Grant moved the arms chest, cleaned and fixed a few things on it, then went to the great cabin to sand another column. Sadly it had been painted so it took them all day and still not finished sanding, there is a lot of white paint to get off. Katie spent her whole day in the great cabin as well, going through all the flags, countries, states, provinces, ASTA and wind flags. I ended up sewing a few holes and rips up in some of them, most of the signal flags smelled really bad so they got washed. We found a really huge British flag as well that smelled horrible. There were four mystery flags that we didn’t know where they were from, ended up being Pitcairn, Panama, Cornwall and some historical Canadian province. I rust busted three metal bands around the main mast on the tween and later help sanded. I enjoy rust busting it just sucks when a giant piece of rust flicks off while wire wheeling it and gouges your leg. In the afternoon since it cleared up a bit Kat did some more deck fixing around the mizzenmast. Ethan finished up the project in the shower to make a lip on the inboard shower so that the curtain stays in the shower with you. Peter left for New York tonight and he’ll be back Friday. We are all really grateful that tomorrow is the day off!
