Sunset Sail

Today was really great, we had work party in the morning and then had from 12 to 5 off. For work party Brooke, Laura and I cleaned the great cabin and then super cleaned the heads and painted a whole bunch of stuff white, fresh paint really covers up the filth.

With the afternoon off Katie took a lot of people to EMS, Jesse and I walked around Fall River, not a whole lot, but we did take a look at Lizzie Borden’s house.

Had a really nice sunset sail, motored out for awhile, turned around and set sail to come back in. Zach was on the dock when we got there so it was funny for him to be throwing heaving lines at us instead of the other way around. I was at the head of the jib while furling, it is really difficult and we should furl it another way, very frustrating.

Even thought it was late, Katie and I went to her house and I got to have a real shower!

Fall River, Massachusetts

Leaving the dock at Newport this morning was really interesting. We put Grant on the dock to take off our dock lines, we eased our dock lines until we had backed out enough. Grant had to get back on board so we swung him the yard arm tackle incase he couldn’t just jump back on.

It was really foggy we the fog horn was going off every 2 minutes and the wind was pushing us in the wrong direction. After we had backed out we had to turn around so we put down the anchor and set the spanker to spin us around. Finally started getting through the fog and some of us were sent to make the tween decks look sexy for our arrival in Fall River.

Once docked in Fall River we were all over the side finishing up painting a few things. There were not enough places for us to tie dock lines so we ended up tying a few to near by trees. We got a new volunteer for a few months, Amy, she’s from Maine and just graduated college and wanted to have some fun before she got stuck in a real job.

Tonight we had a reception aboard, a fundraiser for the local railway museum. Some of the people who worked there and who were there for the reception were on Bounty when she was owned by Fall River and sinking at the dock.

Newport, Rhode Island

Got underway at 4 am and headed North for Newport, Rhode Island. For morning work party Grant, Laura and I finished painting the green. Being over the side and on a staging while underway is a very different situation, lots more fear of falling off. Again A watch was hardly on watch, for only about 45 minutes. I was at the helm as we came into Newport and I didn’t hit anything.

We got the rest of the afternoon off after we cleaned up the boat, I got to hand out with Katie and she drove me around, her mom brought her her car and we went to her home town. She also took me by Ernistina, her first boat she worked on.

Got underway at 6 thanks to B watch. Morning work party consisted of Grant helping Peter organize the forward tank room while Laura and I scraped primer off the deck in the great cabin. Zach later came in and started to pledge the tables and the combination of pledge and paint thinner started to smell like fruit loops.

We got on watch knowing that we might anchor that afternoon, turns out we were only on watch for about 15 minutes before we left fall. A watch got double work party, yay. We ended up painting the rest of the afternoon, green, yellow and black; everyone was over the side till about 1730 when it started to rain.

At one point I was trying to get back in the whaler to finishing the black, the steps were wet so I had to slide down while holding on to the chain plate, missed a little and fell into the water. Luckily most of me landed in the whaler so only my leg got wet.

We are anchored off Rocky Point, Long Island, it’s a little rough out there.

Anchor in Port Jefferson

Left Yonkers at 6 am, I’m glad we dogged watches, now on the 12 to 4. For work party we mainly did chores, made sure the ship was sea stowed and set sail. At the end of our watch we anchored in Port Jefferson on Long Island. We put our broken brow on the whaler and lowered it so it could be towed ashore.

Tours were slow so I ended up oiling the grates back aft and some belay pins. At the last minute John asked me to put something together for lunch, funny how I always get thrown back in the galley. Around 1530 Marcia showed up and I helped her in the galley, putting away food and getting things for her so that dinner would actually be on time.

New York City

Went into New York city. Jesses’ aunt live near the city so she gave us a ride. We had a fun day exploring the city, met up with Zach, Doug, Cookie and Maisie. Went to Chinatown, South Street Seaport and walked till our feet hurt.

On the boat they got a few more tourists, about 300. Clear Water docked for a while, picked up passengers. Also Mitch jumped in the river because it was so hot, but promptly got out because it was so cold.
